Get Involved With Dive Ability

Dive Ability is run entirely by volunteers, without whom it would be impossible to do what we do. We are thankful to every volunteer and are constantly on the look out for new volunteers. Become a member - every organisation needs members and Dive Ability is no exception. You don't need to become a member to get involved, but the membership fee is nominal and helps with our operating expenses. You can download a membership form here.

In the water - we welcome instructors and certified teaching assistants from any training agency, regardless of whether or not you have any previous experience of working with disabilities. Additionally, qualified divers of any level who would like to learn how to buddy with a disabled diver are very welcome. On the poolside - loading and unloading the dive equipment, setting up the dive kit and getting divers in and out of the water requires a team of volunteers. Although specialist lifting equipment is available, safety is our number one priority.

Fundraising - if you have an idea for fundraising, or would like to help in this way, e.g. selling raffle tickets we would love to hear from you. Spread the word - Dive Ability is all about introducing as many new people as possible to the thrill and freedom of scuba diving and you can help. Just tell everyone you know about what we do. If you are able to spare some time, we always need volunteers to assist at a few exhibitions and events we attend throughout the year. On a Dive Ability holiday - Dive Ability holidays are a fun way of enjoying diving stunning dive sites with a group of like-minded individuals and there are few things more rewarding than helping someone else to enjoy that fantastic dive. If you would like to help out, please contact us.

HSA Instructor Training Course

The HSA Instructor Training Course will equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to work with a wide range of disabilities. In addition, you will be able to run the HSA Dive Buddy Course.

The Instructor Training Course provides 3 full days of intensive, insightful theory and application for those instructors eager to accept the challenge of sharpening their teaching skills. Each instructor acquires medical information through a series of lectures on disabilities - what they are and how they relate to diving - followed by aseries of confined and open water exercises, designed to simulate disabilities.

By "acting out" these disabilities, instructors actually experience what it's like to BE amobility or sight-impaired diver, a sensitising , often surprising revelation even for instructors who have been teaching diving for many years.

Courses are run periodically throughout the year by our in-house HSA Course Directors, based on the level of demand. Alternatively, we are able to tailor a course to suit dive centres or clubs at a convenient time and location.
